A secure locking mechanism has been added to SMA connectors after customer feedback to prevent accidental disconnection in a critical environment.

Standard SMA interface was chosen by our customer to connect a remote antenna to a soldier’s radio. This was driven by the availability and cost of SMA connectors. For the radio, a Radiall waterproof bulkhead jack was selected. For the antenna, a straight SMA cable plug with a knurled nut was selected to be hand tightened instead of a hex nut requiring a torque wrench.

In operation, the soldier’s movement would sometimes accidentally cause the SMA nut to loosen and the connection between the radio and the antenna would be lost. Our engineers proposed adding a locking nut on the back of the SMA plug and a coding on the receptacle to prevent this accidental disconnection. No tool is required to connect the SMA cable to the radio. Both coupling nut and locking nut are knurled and can easily be tightened by hand. The counter clockwise locking nut locks itself on the edge of the coupling nut. This simple, robust and cost effective design has been tested and the reliability of the connection is guaranteed in operation.

The SMA lock connector is suitable for military applications to interconnect portable devices and antennas.
